Here’s
a phenomenon I’ve pondered for years: everyone wants to look younger
than their actual age. Clearly, the self-defensive inability to accept
our immortality is the subconscious basis of this universal feeling. At
the more superficial level, there is a full spectrum of behavior
centered around this goal. Just look at the multibillion beauty and
fashion industry!
As a plastic surgeon, I thought that dramatic changes to reverse the signs of physical aging in the face or body would produce consistent dramatic positive responses. Unfortunately, this is not the case. My anecdotal experience coincides with published clinical studies of satisfaction rates after surgery over time. Ironically, most patients return to a pre-op level of how they felt about themselves.
I
have found that patients who truly do feel and look younger assimilate
the bodily change of surgery into a more comprehensive program for
looking younger. You might say the surgery is the “kick in the ass” that
gets them to stay on board with a proactive investment in their
appearance. The synergy of the subsequent behavioral changes and the
physical change of the surgery create a phenomenal visual change and
psychological boost.
It ALL matters: your attitude; your projected confidence; your hair color and style; your skin color, texture and turgor; your makeup; your posture, your clothes; your shoes, etc. You can select endless physical signs that you feel energized and youthful. And when you feel “youthful” inside, you set yourself free to make the right lifestyle choices.
Admit it or not, if you look in the mirror and see someone heading downhill (getting old), it will affect your day and how you behave and engage the world. If you see an image of a youthful, “in the game,” energized individual, your day will be a different experience.
Everything matters if you want to live each day of your life with zest and “youthfulness.” The secret is in the details. In my blogs and Penny’s blogs we’ll share the secrets of looking young at any age. Stay tuned for more details.
